Alternatively, access your files from iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, or Box using the app's integrated document browser. If you prefer keeping your files private, you can store them on your device only.

The ability to highlight and annotate text faster is another standout feature of Highlights. You can select text with your finger, Apple Pencil, or mouse pointer and easily apply annotations such as highlighting, underlining, and strikethrough. Comments can be added to annotations or created as individual sticky notes. Context-aware popovers streamline the annotation process, reducing the number of taps required. Default annotation colors save you the hassle of repeatedly setting the color for the same type of annotation.

Annotations can also be transformed into notes, allowing the extracted contents to be organized and sorted. You have the option to customize formatting and contents, as well as sort annotations chronologically or using your own color coding system.

Highlights goes beyond traditional annotation capabilities by offering built-in text and table recognition powered by machine learning. This feature allows images containing text or tables to be converted into editable text and tables with a single tap, enabling easy access to underlying data.

The app's Smart Copy feature simplifies the process of copying annotations by automatically converting them to the desired format. You can copy text markup as text, image selections as images, tables as CSV, and citations as BibTex.

When it comes to citation management, Highlights excels at providing convenient lookup options. The app can fetch DOI-links and metadata for references, allowing you to markup any reference and quickly look it up. If you have already read the referenced work or have it stored in your reference manager library, Highlights will provide a direct link.

Highlights offers a range of export options, making it easy to save or share your notes in various formats such as Markdown, TextBundle, HTML, WebArchive, or PDF. You can also share your notes directly to popular note-taking apps like Apple Notes, Bear, Craft, Evernote, DEVONThink, Keep It, MindNode, Notion, Obsidian, Roam Research, or Ulysses. Alternatively, you can send your notes via email to colleagues.

In addition to these features, Highlights provides various other functionalities such as dark mode support, multi-window support on iPadOS, keyboard shortcuts and navigation, system Copy and Undo gestures, alternative app icons, custom accent colors, Apple Pencil double-tap gestures, and power annotation tools.

This subscription offers additional export options for other apps and editable formats, the ability to extract information using table and text recognition, customization of accent colors and app icons, power annotation tools, citation lookups, and Smart Copy functionality.

Highlights Pro provides a 14-day free trial period, and you can cancel your subscription at any time. Your subscription will automatically renew unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24-hours before the end of the current period. Payment will be charged to your iTunes account within 24-hours prior to the end of the current period. Any unused portion of a free trial period will be forfeited upon purchasing a subscription.
